Standing Desk Converter vs Full Standing Desk

If you want to add standing — and eventually walking — to your day, the choice is whether to raise your existing desk surface or replace the desk. Both work; only one of them works well with a walking pad.

Our verdict

Start with a converter if you are testing whether you like standing, or if your desk is a keeper. Go straight to a full sit-stand desk if you plan to add a walking pad — converters sit on top of a fixed-height desk, and the maths rarely leaves clearance for a pad underneath.

The walking pad constraint

A pad adds roughly 5 inches under your feet. A converter cannot lower your desk, so you need a fixed desk that is already unusually tall for the combination to work. A sit-stand frame removes the problem entirely.

The stability constraint

Converters wobble more as monitor weight increases. A monitor arm clamped to the fixed desk rather than the moving platform is a common fix.
